What Works
Vishal’s performance as Linga is the film’s biggest asset, and given he’s simultaneously directing, that’s a genuinely impressive balancing act. The supporting cast pulls its weight too. Dushara Vijayan and Anjali both bring presence to roles that could easily have been reduced to functional love-interest or family parts, and John Vijay and Jayaprakash add solid texture in support. Nobody in this film is coasting.
Technically, Makutam is genuinely impressive for a directorial debut. The production has real scale, with G.V. Prakash Kumar’s score doing a lot of work to sustain tension and intensity through the action stretches, and cinematography from Richard M. What Doesn’t
The ambition of the triple-role, multi-era structure occasionally works against the film’s momentum. Shifting between three versions of Linga across different points in his life asks the audience to reorient more than once, and in a couple of stretches the transitions feel more like structural showcase than story necessity. It’s not a film that ever loses the thread entirely, but a tighter hand on how often and how abruptly it jumps between eras would have made for a smoother watch.
