August 14: A Four-Film Independence Day Cluster
Independence Day weekend is carrying an unusually heavy Telugu slate this year. Four films release on August 14 alone, each aimed at a different audience, which means very little of the box office fight is a direct head-to-head between any two of them.
Agadha
M.S. Raju’s mystic thriller releases in five languages at once, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi, led by Kamakshi Bhaskarla and Shravan Reddy. It’s a genre departure for Raju, better known as a producer behind Okkadu and Varsham, and the teaser has already crossed 14 million views.

Vishwanath and Sons
Suriya and Mamitha Baiju lead this Tamil-Telugu bilingual family drama from director Venky Atluri, fresh off his 2024 hit Lucky Baskhar. It’s releasing into unusually stacked national competition, more on that below.

Makutam
Vishal’s directorial debut, in which he also plays three distinct roles. The project was originally attached to another director before Vishal took over to complete it himself, and it’s the 99th film under his own Super Good Films banner.

Pallaburusu
A small-town family comedy that starts with an elderly father demanding a modern toothbrush from his son instead of a traditional neem twig. Directed by Uday Chauhan and backed by Annapurna Studios and Epic Studios, it’s the least star-driven of the four and arguably the least directly contested on genre.

The National Competition on August 14
Two major Hindi releases share the same date nationally: Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2, directed by Nitin Kakkar, and Sunny Deol’s partition-era drama Batwara 1947, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan, also starring Preity Zinta and Shabana Azmi. Neither has a confirmed Telugu release, so they’re not part of this hub’s coverage, but they’re worth knowing about since they’ll be competing for the same multiplex screens and audience attention nationally, particularly affecting Vishwanath and Sons, which shares more overlapping audience interest with big-ticket Hindi releases than the other three Telugu titles do.
August 15: Hushar Pittalu
One day after the Independence Day cluster, Hushar Pittalu opens as a youthful romance drama and the directorial debut of Bikshu Koyagura, who spent 16 years working in the industry before this opportunity. Premiere shows were held on August 12, three days ahead of the wide release.
